The Zakoura Journal

The Foundation creates its journal

Written in simplified Arabic, vowelled, and in large fonts, the Zakoura Journal has asserted itself after three years of publication not only as a pedagogical tool but also as a communication platform between its readers who participate in its editing. This allows the Journal to be the true reflection of Morocco’s social problems.

By creating the Journal, Zakoura aims at supporting the thousand of women taking literacy classes, at encouraging them, at bearing testimony to their success, and at making other people wish to emulate their success.
Some light articles (beauty, cuisine) accompany or more serious sections: law, obligations, civism and health. The “Life History” (“Histoire d’une vie”) section is in the form of a novel so readers like reading. There are two pages dedicated to success and they shed light on women who have assumed their destiny by taking some initiative, be it in the field of the creation of microprojects, of literacy building, or the field of the art.
Sold for 1 Dirham in the most areas of Morocco, it is distributed via the Zakoura Microcredit’s branch offices, the schools of the Zakoura Foundation for Education and through various associations, firms and ministries, in particular the State Secretariat for Literacy. The Secretariat has asserted that the Zakoura Journal is the only newspaper in Morocco today which addresses this part of the population. The newspaper also allows Zakoura Foundation to convey its values which are: solidarity, respect for human dignity, quality requirement, gender equality, and fight against corruption.
InJanuary 2006, the Zakoura Journal was published for the first time with colors. It has a monthly circulation of 32,000 copies and publishes two pages discussing handicraft objects which are in high demand. The goal of those two pages is to encourage innovation among the ladies who have benefited from a loan and also the new female readers from the National Assistance agency (“Entraide Nationale”) from the Moroccan government.

The partners of the Zakoura Journal
From the beginning the Zakoura Journal has been supported by an important partner: he Moroccan business daily “L’Economiste.”. The express delivery company “Transports Carré” and the greyhound company “Compagnie des Transports Marocains” (CTM) ensure free delivery of the newspaper.
