Accessible Education for all
The goal of the Education and Civism Program is to inform Foundation beneficiaries, both women and men, that they have rights and duties. In addition that environmental protection is part of their daily life and that poverty should not be considered as inevitable; rather that, ambition, creativity and a great will is needed to succeed..
The non financial services, with their social benefits, are a great success with the beneficiaries. Neighborhood committees are formed in all of the Foundation’s branch offices. Solidarity activities, initiated by the beneficiaries themselves, are carried out on behalf of street children, senior citizens, handicapped or needy persons. Awareness-raising sessions related to the rights and obligations, health, solidarity, education and illiteracy... are also ensured by the agents during weekly repayment meetings and loan releases.
In 2004, in order to strengthen its awareness-raising activities, the Education and Civism program introduced two activities: structured professional workshops urging the beneficiaries to teach to their peers their know-how and demonstrate their sense of sharing, and the organization of theatre plays created and played by the beneficiaries themselves. In July 2005, these actions resulted in the Zakoura Foundation’s First National Theatre Festival. These two new activities have allowed the beneficiaries to gain more self-esteem and to get out of cultural exclusion.
